Every Indian Railways timetable hides a simple speed number behind its stops and halts. Average speed equals distance divided by running time - but the running time in a platform-to-platform timetable is not the same as time spent actually moving.

Average speed basics

Average speed = total distance / total time. A 300 km section covered in 5 hours runs at 300 / 5 = 60 km/h. Indian Railways quotes this kind of figure per section or between major stations in its commercially published charts.

Why the number feels slow

The training doesn't include only motion: it folds in platform halts, signal checks, speed restrictions near stations and slow approaches at junctions. A train that touches 110 km/h on open track may still average just 55-60 km/h end to end, because a third of the clock is not high-speed running.

What high-speed rail terms mean

Vande Bharat services target average speeds of 85-95 km/h on good sections with quick-turn halts, while conventional mail/express averages usually sit between 40 and 60 km/h. "Maximum permissible speed" is the ceiling on open track; average speed is the honest, real-world number.

Where the number is useful

Plan airport-to-station connectors by comparing average speeds, estimate arrival windows for pickups, or sanity-check whether a "fast" train is actually faster than a daily service on your route. The figure is behavioural, not marketing - so trusting average speed beats trusting tops.
