How this test is scored

Three numbers decide a Hindi typing round, and they are easy to confuse with each other.

1

Five characters count as one word

Whether you typed a long word or a short one, the counter adds five keystrokes per word. This is the rule used in Indian government typing evaluations.

2

Gross minus mistakes gives net

Gross WPM is everything you typed. Each mistake costs five keystrokes from that score. Your result card shows both, so you can see what your accuracy is costing you.

3

KDPH is the figure many exams use

SSC CGL DEST is scored on key depressions per hour, where 8000 is the usual qualifying number. That is roughly 27 WPM. Your result card shows KDPH and CPM alongside WPM.

Which exams need a Hindi typing test?

Check your own notification for the speed and font it asks for. The pattern is usually one of these three.

CPCT and state computer proficiency tests

The Computer Proficiency Certification Test is run by MAP_IT for Madhya Pradesh government posts, and other states run equivalents. A common requirement is 30 WPM in Hindi at an acceptable accuracy.

Court clerk and stenographer rounds

High courts and district courts run typing tests for clerk and stenographer posts. Hindi is usually tested in Mangal or Kruti Dev depending on the state, and the notification says which.

State boards, Patwari and data entry posts

Recruitment boards add a qualifying Hindi typing round of one, five or ten minutes. This is a pass or fail round, so accuracy counts for more than raw speed.

If your notification says Kruti Dev: that font needs a Remington keyboard layout, which is a different skill from Unicode typing and is not what this test measures. This test covers Mangal (Unicode), which is what computer-based exams ask for. Check your notification before you start practising.

A six week practice order

01

Week one: accuracy only

Ignore the WPM number. Run the 1 minute test slowly, check each character before you press the key, and keep mistakes near zero.

02

Weeks two and three: rhythm

Move to 5 minutes a day and try to press keys at an even beat. Run exam mode twice a week so locked backspace stops surprising you.

03

Week four onwards: exam simulation

Run the 10 minute exam mode every other day and write the scores down. Three days in a row above 30 WPM and 90 percent is a good signal.

The beginner guide covers finger positions, the keyboard map and a full week by week plan. The keyboard chart has every key.

Frequently asked questions

How is typing speed calculated?
Government typing tests count five keystrokes as one word. Gross WPM is your total characters divided by five, then divided by the minutes you typed for. Net WPM subtracts your mistakes from that. Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly.
What speed do government exams ask for?
Most Hindi typing qualifications ask for around 30 WPM at 90 to 95 percent accuracy. SSC CGL DEST is scored differently, on KDPH, where 8000 is the usual qualifying figure. Your result card shows both, so you can see which one you are being measured on.
Which font does the test use?
Mangal, which is the Unicode standard for Devanagari and comes built into Windows, macOS and Linux. Older exams still ask for Kruti Dev, which needs a Remington keyboard layout. If your notification names Kruti Dev, check the layout before you practise.
What is the difference between exam mode and practice mode?
Exam mode locks backspace and runs the timer for the full duration you picked. The result appears only when time runs out. Practice mode allows backspace and ends as soon as you finish the passage.
Does it work on a phone?
The page loads on a phone, but Hindi typing exams happen on a physical keyboard. Use a laptop or desktop for real practice and treat the phone as a quick check.
Is my typing sent to a server?
No. The test runs entirely in your browser and there is no account to create.
How long does it take to reach 30 WPM in Hindi?
With twenty to thirty minutes of practice most days, four to eight weeks. The first weeks feel slow because the keyboard layout is new to your hands. Work on accuracy first; the speed comes with it.
