A WiFi speed test prints four numbers, but most people only look at one - download speed. The other three (upload, ping, jitter) explain the frustrating cases where downloads are fast yet video calls stutter. Here is how to read the whole result like a network engineer, minus the jargon.
The four numbers on the screen
What each figure means
- Download (Mbps) - how fast data reaches your device from the internet. This drives streaming, browsing and app updates.
- Upload (Mbps) - how fast your device sends data out. Zoom calls, cloud backups and sending photos lean on this.
- Ping (ms) - the round-trip delay to the test server. Lower is better; 20-50 ms is snappy, over 150 ms feels sluggish.
- Jitter (ms) - the variation in ping between packets. High jitter breaks video calls even when speed looks fine.
The Mbps vs MB/s trap
1 byte = 8 bits. An 80 Mbps plan moves roughly 10 MB per second, so a 500 MB download takes about 50 seconds, not 6. Software shows MB/s while ISPs sell Mbps - divide the plan number by 8 to get realistic file-transfer speed.
Speed needed for real life
- HD streaming (Netflix/YouTube): 5-8 Mbps
- 4K streaming: 25 Mbps
- Video call (Zoom/Meet): 2-4 Mbps per participant
- Gaming (latency matters more): 3-10 Mbps but low ping
- Multiple family members in parallel: 100 Mbps or more
How to run a trustworthy test
- Plug in on Ethernet for the honest line speed; on WiFi, sit near the router.
- Close heavy apps and pause downloads during the test.
- Run it 3 times (morning/afternoon/night) and take the median, not the best.
- Check you are on 5 GHz, not congested 2.4 GHz, if WiFi is slower than Ethernet.
