How GPA is calculated
Each letter grade is converted to a grade point (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on), multiplied by the credit hours for that course, then summed and divided by total credit hours. This weighted average means a 4-credit course affects your GPA more than a 1-credit course.
The standard 4.0 scale
- A = 4.0, A- = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0
- F = 0.0
Some schools use slightly different scales (plus/minus grades, or a 5.0 scale for honours courses) — check your institution’s official policy for anything that affects admissions or scholarships.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work for semester or cumulative GPA?
Both — enter all the courses and credit hours you want included. For a single semester, add just that semester’s courses; for cumulative GPA, add every course you’ve taken.
