You can't copy text out of a photo - but OCR (optical character recognition) can. Image-to-text tools scan the shapes in a picture, match them to letters and digits, and return the text as plain editable output instead of pixels.

An OCR engine first cleans the image - correcting tilt and uneven lighting - then separates the picture into characters and numbers, and finally scores letter guesses against a language model to rebuild whole words. That is why a clean, straight, well-lit image reads back almost perfectly while a blurry one returns nonsense.

- Reads well: printed receipts, bills, book pages, ID cards, laptop screenshots, handwritten documents with block capitals.
- Reads badly: cursive handwriting, tiny fine print, watermarked or textured backgrounds, low-resolution images, text at a sharp angle.
Tips that double your accuracy
- Flatten the paper fully and photograph from directly above - no glare, no folds.
- Keep the text large in frame; crop to just the region you need.
- Use the original image, not a screenshot of a screenshot.
